This episode we face the topic of doing hard things in our walk with God. James talks about the development of character and the joy we can anticipate when encountering struggles of life. Following Jesus doesn’t mean absence of hard times, but the guidance and peace that comes from Him. We pray this episode encourages you, especially if you are in this kind of season.

SPEAKER_05

Hi, welcome back. Hi besties. My name is Jasmine. I'm Tatiana. And welcome to Jesus and Besties. Yay! Ooh, so exciting. We're gonna start off by just giving personal updates if we have any. Um, Tatiana, do you have anything? I'm already looking at you like uh you can just skip over me. We're like three, and there's no personal update. I'm just kidding. I'm like, not really. Um, I don't have any personal updates either. I just do want to say that if you if you hear me sounding a little weird, I had some dental work done yesterday, and so I'm still a little sensitive. So that is what you're gonna be hearing from my voice for a little bit.

SPEAKER_00

I already noticed my mic tilting, so I'm just gonna hold it like this. Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_05

Are you sure you wanna hold it like that the entire time? Yeah, we'll be fine.

unknown

Alright.

SPEAKER_05

Alright, guys, welcome back to this episode, which is doing hard things with the Lord. Ooh. Yeah. I know sometimes we'll hear that and we're like, ooh, hard things. What do you mean by that?

SPEAKER_00

I think it looks different for everybody. I think something hard that someone else be going through may not not to say someone's better than someone else, but it's just we all have different weaknesses. We all have different areas where we're really sensitive in, and it could look similar or different. I know I've heard stories where I'm like, oh, that's gotta be tough, and then there's other things where it I'm like, oh, it did, you know, but everyone's different.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. I mean, um, we've mentioned it before, like, being a Christian is not easy. Yeah, you have to do a lot of hard things and go through a lot of hard seasons. Um, but God uses it all for his glory, and and I think it's something that we don't really always realize at the time that we're going through those difficult things.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I think we should also normalize going through hard things. Yeah. I feel like we should. Yeah. It's not gonna be easy. It's not, and like and also life life will happen and throw things at us, and I feel like, especially as Christians, what I see a lot is we rebuke and you know, do all those things when life happens and sometimes it's the Lord moulding us or using it to mold us, um, and we're resistant. Um, so we hope to encourage anyone listening to embrace the hard things and to welcome Jesus in those hard things as well when they happen.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and um, yeah, so as we said, like following Jesus is not always gonna be rainbows and butterflies. I feel like a lot of the times we follow Jesus and we feel like our life is like just gonna instantly get better. And I feel like, yeah, like Jesus has transformed us, and I feel like my life has been so much better since then, but I doesn't mean that I have not had any like hard things that I've got had to go through, you know what I mean? Um, so it just it requires a lot of hard work, effort, and obedience. Um, but I feel like as you have a deeper connection with the Lord, you're gonna be able to learn how to discern his voice and really follow him. And sometimes that includes making decisions that are not easy, yeah, you know, for sure. But um, yeah, it also like encouraged uh I'm sorry, it requires obedience, like courage. Um, there are some times that you have to make a decision that you know that the Lord is telling you to do that you just don't want to do or you're scared to do. Um, but you know, he uses all of these hard seasons to produce um growth, you know, spiritual growth.

SPEAKER_00

Sure. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Do you um want to read? And we can start off with James 1, 2 to 4.

SPEAKER_00

In chapter 1? Yeah. Two through four. Yeah. Um, so it says, Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow. For when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. James is a character builder. Yeah. Right out the gate, he's just hitting all the things.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and it's so funny because like we had notes, right? And then, like, I don't even think I had sent you the notes before, but you're like, we should do James, you know, um, James chapter one.

SPEAKER_00

And I'm like, wait, that is gonna be in my notes. Yeah, I feel like there was like a lot of godwinks around this. We were talking about this, um, and how she said she already had it in her notes, and then today I attended a memorial service for support, and they kept talking about doing hard things and in honor of this person, and they kept referencing James. So I was sitting there like, Oh yeah, we're gonna talk about doing hard things on the podcast, like little god winks like that of like, yeah, you're going in the right direction. Like, this is what I want to talk about. So I love that.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, because I feel like it's not talked about a lot because when I first started my walk with Jesus, I was like, Oh, like this is gonna be so easy, but it's like it is like so hard, and I don't even think like people realize it sometimes, and you're like, wait, like this is hard, you know, but it's so rewarding, right?

SPEAKER_00

Do you feel like part of that too is the church just being more vocal about it? Like walking with Jesus is hard and their sacrifices, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I mean, I think so. Um, especially because like you start to really like walk with Jesus, you start to ask him more, like Lord, how do you want to use me? What you what do you want me to do? And sometimes it's like removing people or like you know what I mean, like making decisions that you didn't really think that you'd have to do. Um you know, and so it it becomes harder and and we get comfortable, and it involves us being uncomfortable. Like sometimes, like, for example, for me, I feel like a couple of the hard things that the Lord had, you know, had me do is either was leave my relationship, not begging that person as much as I wanted to, my flesh wanted to beg this person to like work it out. I feel like God was like, no, and I had to be obedient to that, being obedient to not seek validation from other people or other men, um, and simply use this single and waiting season to be with the Lord only. That has been really hard. I love the Lord and I love my time with him, but also I have been very um having like such a hard time in my waiting season of like, where's my husband? But like the Lord reminding me that I need to focus on him, and that has been really hard. Um, not you know, downloading apps, like trying to meet people, like you know, and trying to trying to um just wait for the Lord's timing, yeah, and then also being uncomfortable, like putting myself in uncomfortable situations to be able to grow because I feel like that's the Lord, like the Lord is telling me to get out there, like and um be bold in my faith, which has been really hard as well, because I'm so used to being in my um like comfortable, yeah. Like a little bit, but I want the Lord to use me, so I'm like, well, that's gonna involve me to be uncomfortable to grow me.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, especially when the Lord takes over and just takes that thing or that person away, and you have no control of the circumstances and getting it back. Yeah, like they just like the Lord worked on your behalf and just did it anyways.

SPEAKER_05

I know.

SPEAKER_00

But then looking back in hindsight, you know, like okay, the Lord loved me so much, like I'm so glad he actually did that himself because I couldn't have done it, but I'm glad he took control, even though I didn't want to give him control, you know.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and like this verse that J of James that you like just read, I feel like um like testing our faith isn't meant to destroy but to strengthen it. So like he's going to he's building character, like he's building us to to grow, and it doesn't mean that he wants us to suffer, but this it has to happen to allow us to grow and it's stretching us, yeah. Yeah, so that's good. Um discussion. Okay, I'm gonna ask you why do we sometimes think following God should be easy?

SPEAKER_00

I thought it was supposed to be easy, me too. I think it and again I think I think just certain people like churches, like they don't verbalize it well. Um, I feel very grateful that our church they teach us to suffer well, and they're yeah, very vocal in explaining that like not everything is gonna be sunshine and daisies, but there's a hope. Like today they were talking about how we can grieve with hope. That when you do believe in Jesus and you put your faith in him. Um I think it's Romans 10 9, when you confess with your mouth and believe with believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord, you will be saved. We can grieve with hope. Um not just when someone, you know, passes away or when just not just when someone passes away, sorry, but when you're just going through tough times, like you can struggle, but you can still have hope that something is gonna come out of it. Um the Lord is doing something. I think of that song. Um, even when I don't see it you're working, even when I don't feel it you're moving, um, because he works everything out for our good. Um, but then I also think of like the life of Jesus, like he he suffered, he had to be bold, and even on the cross, like he suffered, but he was honest with God and he said, Like, I don't want to do this, like, please remove this cup of suffering from me, but let your will be done.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, we were just gonna talk about that in my books. Yeah. So, um, yeah, like down I mean, I'll add what I think about in in that question, but um, that's where he really showed like his human emotions, you know what I mean? Like he did suffer, but he was obedient. Yeah, and he prayed, like prayer got him through that too and gave him the strength of like going through with it, right? Like it it's actually so inspiring, right? Like he he felt that way and he had those emotions, and it he felt scared, you know, and he prayed, he went away and prayed, but he still was being obedient with what had to be done.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And that shows his love for us too, you know.

SPEAKER_00

I know. I think there's also a comfort in knowing that because he did live this life, he can he knows exactly what we're going through and exactly what we're feeling, and even like his scars, like how we have scars, he has scars too, like the nails in his hands, and even just the emotional part of people not understanding his mission or understanding him and things like that. Like he understands exactly how we feel, so it does allow us to be more open with him and vulnerable with him because he understands.

SPEAKER_05

That is one thing that um I learned was like him knowing exactly how we feel emotionally, you know. I heard something today, it was like a a little mini sermon, but it was like um this is just an example, but like when people go through divorce, right, they feel hurt, they're heartbroken. It's something hard that they have to go through. But the Lord, like, he knows how they feel, they he knows like the emotions that you're going through. Um because say, for example, you're going through this divorce because your spouse cheated on you, right? But the Lord knows because he also has felt that. And he said, People cheat on me with other gods, right? Like, well, he didn't say that, but like the pastor was like saying, like, the Lord is also like knows how that feels because people, his people cheat on him with other gods too, you know what I mean? Like, and I felt like that was like actually kind of like wow, you can use that in different like contexts too, you know what I mean? But he knows how that felt, right? Like how that feels and what you're going through. Like a lot of the times when I first started my walk, like I didn't realize how he understood our emotions, but like that goes back to like he was put here on earth, right? He came and he he was in human form and he knows what we feel, every emotion, every suffering, like he knows that and he he um like felt that firsthand, you know what I mean? Yeah, so yeah, but for me, um, let me pull up my notes because I have a few for these. A lot of the times we only hear the good parts through faith, especially on social media. So a lot of the times we're scrolling and we see amazing um testimonies of other people on social media, right? But a lot of the times we forget that during this walk with Jesus, we could also suffer and do hard things, right? It's not just good things because the the Lord will bless us abundantly, you know what I mean? Yeah, and that is amazing. Um, and I'm so grateful for that. But there are also times where we have to be obedient, and we always talk about obedience on here, if you like, but it's like you have to be obedient, and that's not gonna be easy, right? You know, um, and then so I put in my notes like, but the Bible talks about how often following God requires sacrifice and hardship. It's not because he doesn't love us, but because he's growing us through these challenging parts. Um, the best part is knowing he's with us through it all, which reminds me about reading John today. I think it was like John chapter six when he was walking on water, and he is walking towards the boat um in the middle of a storm, and it's like he's walking through that storm, he will walk through that storm for us, you know what I mean? He everybody may be walking away from it, but he's walking to it to be with us, and like it's so easy to forget that he's with us during these storms, but it's like he really is with us through it all.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I even love how it says in that story right before when Jesus tells them, Go in the boat and I'll meet you on the other side, like that promise of I'll meet you on the other side, I'll be with you through this storm, like how he called out to Peter, like, come walk on the water. Or Peter said, like, like challenging Jesus, like, if you call me, I'll come. And he was like, Okay, come, you know, but like that promise of like I'll meet you on the other side, like you're gonna make it through in one piece, you're gonna be fine. It might look a little uh weird, it might you with the questions and maybe some doubt and stuff like that and fear, but he'll meet you on the other side.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, he really will. So good. Um, and then will you read um Luke 923?

SPEAKER_06

Yes. Let me find it on my end too. Okay, come there. First twenty-three. Um yeah, nine twenty-three.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Then he said to the crowd, if any of you want to be my follower, you must give up your own way. Take up your cross daily and follow me. Yeah, hear that? It's a lot of weight on that.

SPEAKER_05

It really is, but it's also one of my favorite verses, I feel like it has become because it reminds us like we don't just pick it up when we want to. We don't pick up that cross. Like, being Christian does not mean that you get to pick up that cross when you feel like it, or when it's easy, or when it's convenient to you. You pick up that cross every single day and you deny yourself. You deny yourself, and it's not easy. It is so hard doing that on the daily, but you do it and you deny yourself, and that is every single day of your walk with Jesus, you know.

SPEAKER_00

I feel like the days where it's hard, those are the days that count the most. And they produce, like how James was talking about, like the fruits of your character and more endurance. It's those days where it's very important to show up and pick up your cross.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and like I have gone, I think like recently I I mentioned this like on a past um episode that I've been like really struggling with like spiritual warfare, and I really didn't know how to deal with it. Like, thankfully, like God has given me a good community and friends that really taught me how to like go through that and and really reminded me like to put on God's armor every single day and every night. Um, but I really was going through it to where I have like even question, like what if it's just easier to go back to like what I was, you know, like my my past life? Like what if like I remember like it was I was in the car, I was like so frustrated, I was crying and just like scared, I guess. And um, and I just started questioning like, wouldn't it be like so much easier to just go back to my own life? Wow, like just so I wouldn't be bothered by the darkness, you know what I mean? But then like even instantly, like I just like regretted it because I'm like, no, like it's not gonna be easier, but like God has already won, you know? Yeah, and so it really is so hard, and I feel like it's not gonna be easy to pick up your cross every single day, but just knowing that you have the like at that moment, it's like I was losing faith, and I felt so guilty for that. But it's like you just go leave it at the feet of Jesus, and it's not like he doesn't want you for thinking that, you know what I mean? Like he doesn't, it's not like he's gonna turn away from you. It's like you go and you say it, like you leave it at the feet of Jesus and you leave it in his hands, and he will take care of that. And but truly having the faith, like, Lord, I know you've already won this, you know. But it's so hard, and I feel like those thoughts can really come in, and that is when the enemy, like, really tries to get you, you know?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's very easy, especially in those like vulnerable moments, and like how the Bible says the enemy like prowls around and like studies us and watches like where are they weak, what are they like, and even like the 40 days that Jesus was tempted, he tempted him with like bread, he knew he was hungry and fame and riches. He just he had to bow down and he was very strong, and he was like, No, I mean I'm not I mean sometimes I'm not saying no, you know, it's really easy to give into those things, but like how you said, like we already won and we're fighting from victory, not for it.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. So good. Um, what is a hard thing God has asked you to do?

SPEAKER_00

I think for me it's always been just um to trust him. I know, like when I first started walking with Jesus, I was so anxious. I was really confused. I was still navigating my parents' divorce. They divorced after 20 years, so that took a really long time to navigate. So I think I started going to center point, like maybe three years after they divorced. So I was still really trying to figure out like holidays and even just everyday like little questions, like things that would come up with life that like I have to ask my parents or they have to talk about something. Like it was really hard. Um and like learning about God at the same time. I'm grateful and looking back um nine years later, I can see God's fingerprint through all of that. And as much as I not so much anymore, because like I I feel like when you understand and you see too much of what God has done, you stop asking questions. Yeah. Because you've seen too much, and it does like how James is talking about, it does build endurance and that trust in God. But at the time that wasn't the case, and I would look at other people and be like, Lord, why couldn't my parents just stay together? And then now I think back and I'm like, I never would have met God or built that endurance had that not happened. Yeah, like I can't, I mean, my parents are very civil now, like thank God, but like I I can't imagine life them staying together, and I'm not saying the Lord sent that, but he allowed that to happen because he knew what it was gonna produce, yeah, and it's I'm not perfect, but like I'm stronger, I'm wiser, I am more grateful, and I have seen too much of the Lord. I feel like when we go through hard things, it's like a like a deposit into like a savings account for when future things come up. It's like I have money to be able to pay for that. It's like I have strength to be able to walk through that, not by myself, but like I have trust in the Lord. I have strength to walk through this. I've seen what the Lord has already done with that. This is nothing, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, that's good. So it's not like an event, but it's it's events in my life where the Lord just and I had no control over these things. So it's like I just I had to trust and I had no choice. You know, so it's d things like that, like just trusting.

SPEAKER_05

That's good. And looking back at like what the Lord has already done in your life, you know. That's really good. What about you? Um, I think I mentioned it a little bit earlier, just like leaving my relationship. Like I could have um begged for this relationship, you know, when you go and and you think that okay, like this is my person, like this is someone that I can spend the rest of my life with and then have it totally taken from you. I feel like it really is um it's hard, and then just like you said, trusting um that the Lord has someone perfectly for me. Um, because I have like I feel like especially in the season, I have really been like, well, um God, you know, I am still here, and I think almost like the thoughts of like, well, what if the Lord doesn't want me to have someone? Like, what if I'm meant to be single? Which I heard something today, like, singleness is not a curse, you know what I mean? Like it's a gift, um, but also like marriage is a blessing, you know what I mean? So I kind of like in between those two right now, and it's just really like trusting the Lord that He has someone um perfectly for me. Um, but I just don't even think that it's time right now because of the way that I've been thinking. But it's been so hard, guys. Like it's I'm still working through it. Um, going from like really thinking that this person is your person, and then like trusting that the Lord has more, you know what I mean, for you. Um, so it's that, and then also just stepping out of like my comfort zone, and I'm still doing this, like I'm still doing both of these things, right? Um, but like really praying, and I know this prayer, you know, so I'm kind of like uh, you know, but I I still pray this prayer. Yeah, is like Lord, use me because I want the Lord to use me in any way that He wants. Um, but I know with him using me, it's gonna be uncomfortable. And I'm I'm a little it's hard. Yeah, it's hard doing uncomfortable things. That's stepping out in faith, being bold. Um, like I have not really mentioned it to many people. I think I've only mentioned it to you, and then like just Riley. Um, but like I really do feel like my heart is pointing towards like ministry, and it's like, how do I even do that? Like, how Lord, how? I'm so shy. I feel like I am not a good speaker. Um, like, how do you want me to do this? Like, what does it even look like? But it's like trusting him that if he does want me to do that, that that's going to point, you know, he's preparing me now. Yeah, you know, but like who knows what that looks like.

SPEAKER_00

I know that's crazy. So those are my two hard things. God's just full of surprises. He really is.

SPEAKER_05

I was just talking, like, me and Riley went to the beach on Friday, and we were just talking about how like we our lives looked to us back then. Like, back then, I was like, Well, I thought I was gonna climb corporate ladder, make a lot of money, be materialistic, have a nice house, and be married, like to a rich man. Like, that is what I thought my life like there is nothing else after I graduated, nothing else came to my mind other than like, okay, corporate, make money, grow, and that's it. Like, and now it's crazy how I'm like, yes, I'm blessed for my corporate job, but like I want to do ministry, like I want to do that, and I I wanna like I just want to talk about Jesus for the rest of my life all day. Like, that is really like I wish I can just read my Bible all day, like not have to work, like that is it. Read my Bible, but like I know that like the Lord is preparing me for something greater, like and I know that I just cannot skip to like doing ministry and then like you know, because I still have to learn. That's why I feel like I'm taking these classes, like the evangelism class. Like, yeah, I don't know how to go up to someone and share the gospel. I'm being real with you guys. Like, if I'm going to the store, I'm scared. I'm barely learning how to like ask the Holy Spirit, like, okay, like who highlight someone that you would like me to go and share the gospel with. You know, and it is so hard, but I imagined my life so different before, and now I'm like, I don't even care about anything materialistic. I don't care about marrying a rich man, just a man that submits to the Lord.

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_05

And I don't even care about like corporate, I'm blessed from my job, and I know that I can learn to to use my gifts there for now. Yeah, but I feel like the Lord is like I I don't know, I just want to talk about Jesus one day to people, but I need to learn how to do that, you know?

SPEAKER_00

It's just the initial like going up to people and starting that conversation now. I feel you, and then but once it starts, it's like it starts.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and it's nice. Yeah, you know, some people need it, and the Lord will highlight that and um tell us like you know what to say. It but it's very important to be able to like actually like ask the Holy Spirit that moment, like, what do you want me to do?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So we're not we haven't gone out yet. This next week is gonna be um, we're still gonna learn like extra material and like do like activations. Okay. Um, but the week after that, we're gonna go out into like the stores and just evangelize.

SPEAKER_00

I was gonna ask you, wait, when are you guys going out? Because I know it's coming up. That's exciting. How do you feel?

SPEAKER_05

I'm nervous. Like, I am so nervous that like I'm gonna be like, Holy Spirit, what do you want me to say? But then like not be able to hear anything. But um, like just being able to have that faith and that trust that the Lord will come through, you know? Yeah, and like He will highlight whoever like He wants us to speak to. Um, and I pray that it goes like just good, you know?

SPEAKER_00

Wow.

SPEAKER_05

But I'm nervous.

SPEAKER_00

You're gonna do amazing. I'm so excited to hear all the testimonies. You're gonna do so amazing, though.

SPEAKER_05

But yeah, so that's kind of what we're gonna be doing. But I'm excited, alrighty. So um obedience, even when it's uncomfortable. So we I feel like we've we talked about it, like being obedient. Um, and he calls us to do things that are outside of our comfort zone, which I feel like for me, like I again, it's been a scary prayer to praise like God, you know, use me. I want you to use me, but um, like don't keep me comfortable. Like, don't keep me comfortable, make me uncomfortable. Um, because that's a hard thing to do.

SPEAKER_00

I yeah, I think as Christians we have to be comfortable being uncomfortable. Especially like with ministry, like it's it's an inconvenience, like a lot of things are inconvenient.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, what what does that look like to you though? Like being um like um being obedient, even when it's uncomfortable.

SPEAKER_00

Right now, um, I would say I don't know, I can't remember which proverb it was, but I was reading the one about um being lazy. Okay, and it literally said, you know, don't say five more minutes for a snooze, and I was like, Oh, you know, you're like lock me. I'm guys, I'm not even kidding. It was right to me, and I was like, Okay, Lord, I hear you. And I have been saying that I do want to get up early and read my word before the gym and things like that, and I'm happy to report this last week. I did do it. I it was awesome. I only read for like it was probably like 10 to 15 minutes, but it was something, and I felt a difference in my spirit and in my heart. That's so good. I do want to grow in that more, but um, yeah, I did like that. I I think it's I feel like right now that's what it looks for me. It seems small, but it's just keeping up. I'm trying to find it, guys. I'm sorry, but um, yeah, it's one of the proverbs where he talks about laziness, and um that's just what it's looked like for me. And as warm as my bed feels and how comfortable I get, whatever position I'm you know, sleeping in, it's like no, he's and I'm learning that like he's absolutely worth it, like getting up and being uncomfortable, and um even like little decisions of what I want to eat. It's like no, I have a healthy body, I can steward it, steward it, you know, being in the gym, and it's like I can move my body, um even though I don't want to, and I'm really tired and it's really early. It's like no, you know, you have another day, your the Lord woke you up, um, there's breath in your lungs, like do it. Um yeah, so for me, it's it's small, but it's it's crucifying your flesh, and it does produce a lot, and that that's just what it looks like. Yeah. Right now in the season for me. What about you?

SPEAKER_05

So good. Um, I think like it just should be like um for me, like obedience um looks like where I'm uncomfortable is doing the prophetic evangelism class. That was like hard, and I know like just leading up to it, I feel like I'm gonna be so uncomfortable doing this. Um, but it's like being obedient, like I know I need to learn this too. Um, I feel like just like also, I mean, I love reading my Bible, I love um spending my time with the Lord, but I think like maybe just doing it more. Um, because like one thing that I've noticed is like reading my word more, like I have I've known more, like I've learned way more without even realizing it. Um I'm only like seven walks. I mean seven walks. I'm only seven walks. No, I'm only seven months into my um walk with Jesus, like like officially officially, and I say that because like that's when I really like decided to take my walk seriously. Um and before that was just lukewarm and you know, lukewarm is not it. You know what I mean? But um, yeah, and I feel like I've grown a lot, and that is like I can say like I as much as I can say like I've I think I've been obedient, you know, and yeah, and I pray to be even more obedient and just the Lord has to be a little bit more clear with me because I'm a little like I'm I just don't pay attention sometimes. I need to be more sensitive to his voice, you know? Yeah, but yeah. Um, would you mind reading Joshua 1 9? I would read it, but I have like the King James James version.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_05

And yeah.

SPEAKER_00

This was actually my verse of the year last year, and it's actually my favorite verse. Okay. Um, yeah, Joshua 1.9. This is my command. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. That's good.

SPEAKER_05

I love this verse because it like reminds us like, be strong and be courageous, like be bold, whether that be going up to somebody that the Lord is highlighting to you at the store. Yeah. Like go and and if you feel that that he's wanting you to go up to this person, go up to them, you know, and and ask him, like, what do you want me to say to this person? And I feel like um from what I have learned, like he will, like he will, you know what I mean? And so um that sometimes is is showing your um your courage, right? You know, then in the Lord and how it says like the Lord will be like will be with you, your God will be with you wherever you go.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. I mean, even just the context of this verse, it's like Moses has just died, and the Lord is speaking directly to Joshua, and Joshua was an assistant to Moses and watching him all those years lead the Israelites, and now it's Joshua's turn. Yeah. And the Lord like giving him a command, but also a promise in that where he says, I will be with you wherever you go. Exactly. So it's beautiful.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Um, how do you why is obedience sometimes scary? Do you feel?

SPEAKER_00

I feel like because we can look at whatever that task may be that the Lord is telling us to do, and it could be very confusing. Like, why are you picking me to do this?

SPEAKER_05

Or why do you want me to say this random the randomest thing to this person right now?

SPEAKER_00

Because we count ourselves out like so quickly. I know for me, like the same thing, like going up to somebody and being like, um, even in like the drive-thru, like last night I went to go get my mom some food and I was like, Should I tell him Jesus loves them? And I got scared. So it, you know, I mean, little things like that, just to like work the muscle, I think is great. You know, get your food first, but but um it's just it just shows how quick we are to like discount ourselves that like I can't do this, and it's not our strength, it's his, and he works in our weakness like that, even something simple like telling somebody, hey, Jesus loves you. Um flesh, like it's our flesh. It's like flesh is like our anti-social flesh.

SPEAKER_05

What are they gonna what are they gonna think of us?

SPEAKER_00

Right, I think Oh go ahead, sorry. No, go ahead. I was just gonna say I think it's also the fear of rejection. Yeah, you know, yeah. It's like what are they gonna say?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, what are they gonna say? What are they gonna like think of me? Like, what if they say no? Like, then you were obedient. Right. You know what I mean? Then you were obedient, you did what the Lord is telling you to do. Right. And you can you can that's fine, you can walk away, you know what I mean? Um, but it is it's scary because we the fear of man, I feel like, you know, of what people are going to think or say about us. Right. Um, I can be honest about that. I feel like right now I have like the of you know, I have I'm on fire for the Lord, right? Yeah. But I feel like sometimes I can think I've been hearing like a lot of like just voices in my head of like, well, like what are they gonna say about you? Like, um, I really have so many, like, we have so many ideas and plans for Jesus and Besties. And like, I just start like thinking, like, well, what if people say this and this and this about you? Or like what if people don't like it? And I feel like that is like it's scary.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

But it's like, well, I'm gonna be obedient, you know what I mean? Like, if you were to ask me and Tatiana, I feel like we would say, like, we would love to quit our jobs and like do this every single day, all day of our lives, you know what I mean? But like, obviously, we're I don't feel like the Lord has been saying that right now, you know, right now, but like, yeah, um, we do want to be obedient when that time comes, what what with whatever the Lord wants us to do, you know? Yeah, but um, those are some thoughts that I've been having of like, well, what if this, this, and this, or what are people gonna think? And it's like, you know, but I feel like it's so worth it when you're being obedient.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, especially when you see like the fruit of it and someone says, like, oh my gosh, how did you know? Or like, I needed to hear that. Like, how did you read my mind? You know what I'm saying? And it's like that door open opportunity to talk about well, the Holy Spirit told me, you know, and to bring Jesus into it. So it's it's it is scary, it's really scary. Yeah, it really is scary. But you you never you never know. Um, yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And you know, the good thing is that hard things often like prepare us, they prepare us for purpose, like for what the Lord wants us to do, you know? Right. And we always say this like find the joy in any season that you are going through. Yes. Um, He God uses difficult seasons for to build our character, you know, and to shape our character. Um, and so no matter what season you're going through, find the joy in that. And um you'll time will go by and I feel like you'll realize what God was doing the whole time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you'll see that.

SPEAKER_05

You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Um, so Romans 5-3-4. I forget to like I forget to like get to the page before mentioning the verse.

unknown

Oh.

SPEAKER_05

So give us a moment. Um, yeah, Romans 5-3 to 4. Which is suffering produces perseverance, perseverance, character, and character hope. Can you read it? Because I have it on my notes, but um, I want them to hear the full verse of like oh the NLT or Yeah, the NLT.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, um, verse 3. We can rejoice too when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they can help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

SPEAKER_05

This is a good one. Like, suffering produces perseverance. You know what I mean? It's like shaping our character, and I feel like that's something that often we forget. Like we forget, like we just get so caught up in the suffering that we forget that like God is like using this to mold us for future things, you know what I mean? And there are certain things that we could be going through that um we're just so caught up in, but it's like the Lord will use it for his good. And I feel like that's always, you know, and he can make something so beautiful out of like you know, unfortunate situations, you know.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, definitely.

SPEAKER_05

Let's see. I'm gonna see. I'm gonna ask you that question. Okay, how can God use our struggles to help others?

SPEAKER_00

I think about how because there have been many times that I can recall where I, you know, went through something, it was said and done, and then down the road I met someone who was going through something very similar, or there was a few things that were like highlighted to me that I was like, I didn't go through that, but I know exactly how that feels because my situation made me feel like this. That's good and the power of our testimony of what it can do. Yeah, what we went through, you know, like, oh, I felt like that a few years ago because of XYZ, and it can build that trust within like the community, yeah. Um, of like the body of Christ, and they can see like right in front of them, like what that tri what that trial or what that struggle produced. It's like they are strong in the Lord, they do have the good character, they have a stronger faith. It's hard, like the situation, but look at what it produced.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, it reminds me of the ah, we were just talking about this last week. First Corinthians Corinthians when he talks about comfort. Remember when I told you? Yes. What what verse is that? Do you remember?

SPEAKER_00

You texted it to me, it was Peter. Oh, well, was it Peter? Well, Peter was taught well, Peter or Paul was talking, it was in Corinthians. Oh, okay, okay.

SPEAKER_05

I don't even remember, guys. But um, and I don't have it in this Bible, but yeah, it reminds me of that how like God um gives us comfort through those hard things, you know what I mean? But like he gives us comfort and we can give that to other people, like the comfort that he gave.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Um, and like as a testimony to like how we can be going through these hard things, but then like we can also help others that have gone through other like similar things too, right? Like, you know, and and struggles and um kind of be a testimony of like how that came out to you, you know what I mean? Like how things worked out for you, and they can have that hope too. Yeah, you know, like hey, I went through this, this, and this, and they may be going through that and see how your life and all the fruit that you have now, and I feel like um, and how it played out for you and how God wrote it for you, that it gives them hope too, to be like, Oh, like, you know, I will get through this, you know. The Lord is with me, yeah and he will also, he's still writing, you know.

SPEAKER_00

I think that's why I appreciate so much when leaders are vulnerable, yeah, and they're talking about things they may be going through or how they felt. Like a few weeks ago, our pastor had talked about how he the project that they're working on now, like he didn't want to get up on stage, he didn't want to go to church and talk about what he had to talk about, yeah, and how vulnerable he was. And he's been walking with God for a few decades, so it was so refreshing to see like someone be so vulnerable, and then after all that say, God is faithful. Yeah, and so it didn't feel good, but he gave me the strength to get up here and say what he had to say, and even sharing, like, you know, I got with my mentor and encouraging, like, hey, community is good, Jesus designed us to be like this. Um, and again, just seeing like God's faithfulness. Yeah, so good.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, yeah, and then the last point, um, one of the last points is just like how Jesus himself did hard things, how you mentioned earlier, you know, how like um he did not, you know, he was scared to he prayed for for not having to go through what he needed to go through, you know, but he chose obedience and that ultimately meant suffering.

SPEAKER_06

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_05

You know?

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And um, yeah, what what how do we how do we trust God?

SPEAKER_00

When his plan feels difficult, do you think for me it's just I think two things, it's perspective, which can be much easier said than done, like way easier said than done. Um, but again, I think like that's a muscle. Like after you go through things and you've seen what God has done, you can look forward and be like, okay, I've seen him do that, he can do this. Um, but also the scriptures, especially the gospels, and seeing the life of Jesus and seeing how he wasn't understood by a lot of people, he struggled too. He was tested by the enemy, he was starving, he had to go through inconveniences. Um, you know, even the way he went about miracles, like people didn't understand him. I read a story yesterday um in John, I want to say it was chapter four, where a man went to him and he was like, Please come heal my boy.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And Jesus didn't go with him, he just said it. Yeah, he I just read that too. Yeah, and I can only imagine, like, as a parent being like, Oh my gosh, like I told you to come with me. And then fast forward, he went um his servants, because it was an official, um, his servants came to him and he said, Hey, the fever is gone, your boy's not gonna die. And he was like, When did he when did the fever leave? And he was like, Um, like noon. And that was when Jesus said it.

SPEAKER_05

So it trusted Jesus. He took him at his word and was like, Okay, he said go. And he went, and he didn't even know at that time that he had already been healed. Yeah, he just trusted him and was like Yeah, and just knowing like he probably wasn't he's probably misunderstood a lot.

SPEAKER_00

And even like Peter, like throwing it on the other side, he's like, We've been out here all night, you know, and taking like criticism from people of like, we've been doing this, what are you talking about? And then like fish, yeah, yeah, and then even how the Pharisees like treated him and didn't really take him seriously, and things like that, and then on the cross where he said, you know, forgive them for they don't know what they're doing, and he is at the height of his suffering, yeah, and he's you know, moments away from taking his last breath, and he said, Of all things, he said that, you know, so he understands, and even how he modeled for us, just being honest with God, like I don't want to go through this, like please take this cup of suffering from me, and then to say, Okay, just like let your will be done, that's hard, you know. But there's a there is a comfort knowing, like, hey, he struggled and he has scars too.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, so what about you? That's good. Um, yeah, I just think like surrendering it to God, and I feel like again, it's so easy to say, but it's like so hard to do. Yeah. Um, but it's just like ultimately we have to do that, you know what I mean? Like, and remembering like how he has to do these things, and it's not to see us suffer, right? But it's like to grow us and stretch us for the next season.

SPEAKER_00

I th yeah, I think that's the biggest thing. Like, as you were saying, like what you just said, like the big picture, like it's not to just watch us suffer, yeah, but it's to stretch us for the next season.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, like he doesn't want us to suffer, he loves us so much, but it's like he loves us too much not to discipline or you know what I mean, to discipline us. And then he has to do that because it's gonna grow us and it's gonna prune us and it's gonna stretch us, and it's not always pretty, but it's like he has to do it because he loves us that much. Amen. Amen. Um and God, like so God strength strengthens us in hard seasons. So I feel like that's what we're going with it. It's like we're not meant to do things alone, yeah, especially hard things alone. Um, he gives us the strength and he gives us the peace and he gives us the endurance.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

So um, Jesus walking on water. Oh, that that's what it brings us. That's my little note that I have here. Okay. It's like Jesus walking on water. Like, that's what I read today, is like John chapter 6. I think it was like when he's walking on water, and I said it earlier, but he meets us in the middle of the storm, um, no matter what. And I feel like it's trusting that. It's so hard to do, right? It's so hard to say, okay, like I trust you, Jesus, right? When I'm going through something so, so um hard, right? In my season, right? If for example, um anything that you may be going through, but it's it's really hard to say I trust you, but it's like really trusting that the Lord is meeting you at the middle of your storm and and he's there with you the entire time.

SPEAKER_01

Amen. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Um, if we turn to Philippians 4.13, can you read that one? Yeah, I'm sure a lot of you have heard. Um, this verse, it's Philippians 4 13.

SPEAKER_00

For I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. That one's short, but it's so like it's good. And it's very, a very popular verse. It's like, you know, we can do all things through Christ. Yeah. Every, every everything we can do through him. And I feel like he's the one that gives us that strength um to even get through it, right? Yeah. To get through it. Um, what practices help you stay strong spiritually?

SPEAKER_00

I think community and accountability. Um I know I don't know if it's like it's not considered a sin, but just like opening up to people. I've noticed when I vent to somebody, like how I'm feeling or what I'm going through, what I think the Lord is saying, trusted accountability, obviously. Um, I feel so much better because I just let all this like pressure that I'm feeling out, and I can have more of a clear head. Um I think is a great tool that the Lord has given us. Like how I said He didn't want us to be alone, He designed us for community. Yeah. Um, so I think totally taking advantage of that or a mentor or someone you trust like a leader in your church, just opening up to them. You they might give you some wisdom and some um help you articulate what you're feeling and things like that that can help you just see and think a little more clear.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and also point you back to scripture of like, hey, like this the story helped me. This is what I learned, see what the Lord tells you, just things like that.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, that's good. That leads up to my question that I was gonna ask about how can community help us enter hard seasons. Um and how you said, like, how community um what helps you will what helps you stay strong spiritually is um community, community. That's pretty much the answer for me too, is like um community and in reading my Bible every day.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, for sure.

SPEAKER_05

Reading my Bible every day helps me stay strong spiritually. Um because like I that I feel for me personally, I feel like that's when I hear the Lord the most, like how he speaks to me too. Um, and it gives you reminders, you know what I mean? Like it gives you so much hope and so much faith. Um so that's for me, and then for for how community can help us endure hard seasons, I feel like community can give you so much accountability, um, they can really point you back to Jesus every time. Um, and how important it is to have it. Like we always say this, guys, like community is so important to have. If you think that you can really walk alone, it's like no, you really can't, because you need people um that are also going to be pointing you back to Jesus every time. You know, when you think that you're alone and you don't feel Jesus, like you will He will be right there through your community. And it's not you know what I mean, you have your community, but it's like Jesus is right speaking through them, He can speak through your community to speak to you.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I love that.

SPEAKER_05

So yeah. So we just wanted to give some encouragement. Like, so if if God um has called you for it, he will equip you. So like um, that is one of my favorite things to hear because I feel like sometimes when I don't think that I'm equipped for certain things, um it's like no, he will he will equip you. If he's calling you to do something, he will equip you. What is that one I hear it all the time? I feel like somebody just say it. Like, um, he doesn't call the qualified.

SPEAKER_00

He qualifies the called. He doesn't call the qualified, he qualifies the called.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, like he will equip you to like if he calls you to do ministry, it's like, well Lord, how do you want me to like don't worry? Like, he's literally gonna equip you for it. And um, that's why I feel like I have so much hope and like trust in him right now, especially in like what he wants me to do next, because it's like he will prep I know that he's using this season and I see it. Like he he's preparing, you know? Yeah, he's preparing, and I even though we don't know what that looks like, we will.

SPEAKER_00

I know we're in for a surprise if we're in, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

It's so funny. That's what I feel like I love um just being so close to Jesus because it's like what do you have next? Yeah, he's just so funny, yeah. He's got jokes next, he's got yeah, so but yeah, and then um the closing verse that we wanted to add was uh Galatians 6.9.

SPEAKER_06

Galatians 6.9 No, no you should audition for the worship team. Wow, it's getting just no low key like no low key you can't sing though.

SPEAKER_00

Like in the car. Yeah, in the car.

SPEAKER_05

Sometimes I'm like girl. That is you quit playing. Okay, you and Riley. Let's just start singing. Let's just start, Earl.

SPEAKER_00

Guys, we're turning this podcast into a let's just start with worship worship team. This is our last episode next week. It's gonna be a worship session.

SPEAKER_05

That's so funny. Okay, 6-9. Um, Galatians. Can we read it or do you want to read it? Yes, please. I have like a different version. I just want them to hear like I feel like easier.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Um, so let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time, we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up. I love it.

SPEAKER_05

I love that. And let us so like I love how it says like, and let us not be weary. Like, don't grow weary, guys. I feel like I hear that a lot. I've been hearing that a lot in my season. Really? Um, yeah, it's like don't grow weary.

SPEAKER_00

So Oh yeah, you have now that I'm thinking about it. Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_05

It's just a good verse, you know? For at the proper time we will reap a harvest. That's powerful.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Um, but yeah, guys, I think that's pretty much it. Um, one of the closing questions I can ask you is like, um, what is one hard thing? God may be calling you to step out right now. Step into sorry right now.

SPEAKER_00

Just fine. I think right now it's just like vulnerability. But then like being consistent, like the way it's simple, but it's just waking up every day and like pursuing. I tried to, because before I would um listen to the Bible app on the Stairmaster, and I think it was Monday I did it and it didn't it was so hard to pay attention. And I really felt like it was the Lord saying, like, no, this worked before, it's not working anymore. Like you're asking and you're praying, like, help me wake up in the morning. It's like you're gonna but not in like a rude way, but it was just like or not in like a mean way, but just the Lord like demanding, like, I want your attention, like I want to spend time with you, Tatiana. So that is so good.

SPEAKER_05

I was able to see someone say that too recently of like, well, I'm not you know, you're leaving me undelivered. Oh, Riley, right, yeah, was it at small group, leaving him on red? Yeah, leaving him on red or something, and it's like he wants to spend that time with you. Yeah. So that's good. Um what about you? Yeah, I feel like for me, I think he just wants me to continue to like step out boldly in faith, which I feel like I have been doing, but like not really. I still get scared. Like, I want to to be able to um just listen to what he he tells me and like not miss. Like the other day we were at the beach, and we see a couple, and they're like the guy was taking a picture of the his wife, they were like an older couple.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, it was so cute.

SPEAKER_05

We're at the beach, and I just hear in my head, like, offer to take a picture, but like I didn't, I didn't, and I feel like I missed the mark. And Riley was like, Do you want to take want me to take a picture of you guys? And I was like, Riley is so bold, guys. Like, she is so young, but so on fire for the Lord and so bold. She could teach me a thing or two, yeah. She really does, she really does. Like, I I love her, but yeah, um, she didn't miss that mark. And she was like, No, like, you know, she quickly was like, as soon as I heard that, I was like, and I wasn't gonna do it. Like, I wasn't, I was like, I'm scared. But like it was it was crazy because I'm like, wow, like I need to step out more and be obedient to the Lord. And when I hear that voice, like, just do it. We gotta go back to the beach. Yeah, it was it's crazy though. Excuse me. She was like quickly, yo, she was literally like, Do you want me to take a picture of you? And they're like, uh, yeah, you know, but it's like you have to listen to that voice no matter what it is, even if it's just a picture.

SPEAKER_00

It'll come back, it'll come back around.

SPEAKER_05

But yeah, like I just want to be honest about that because it's like, okay, well, like I'm not always obedient. Like, and I I don't, you know what I mean? Like, we're human, and yeah, but like our goal also is to be obedient, you know, to the Lord and what he's saying. Mm-hmm. So just things like that. So, um, yeah, just encouraging you guys that seasons will be hard, they're not gonna be easy. Picking up your cross daily is a struggle, but it is a good struggle. It's a struggle that will grow you closer to the Lord, um, and it will ultimately like change your life because Jesus transforms you and um he will change your life.

SPEAKER_00

Amen. Yes, he will.

SPEAKER_05

Yay! Um, is there anything else that you want to say before we end this um episode?

SPEAKER_00

I would just say, like, if you're going through something hard, like and you do feel like the Lord is calling you to it or doing something in it, you are not alone. We've all we all have our share of uh things we've had to do. So maybe just open up to somebody in your church or in your community that you trust, and um just ask the Lord to speak to you through his word. This is literally his voice written down. Yeah, um good or community and yeah, his his strength is enough, more than enough. He's so sufficient. Yeah, I yes, and he doesn't just put you in hard things and then just alright, go. You know, he gives you he gives you the tools and the things, just ask him to change your perspective and highlight Lord, what are the tools in this season that are gonna help me? Yeah, and the and it might be waking up at five in the morning and reading your Bible, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Anything things that we could not even thought of, yeah. Yeah, all right, guys. I did want to mention before we end, um, and before we pray, that um if you guys have anybody to share this episode with, please do so. We are available on Spotify, Apple, and um YouTube, and we're just trying to be more consistent with like posting and stuff like that. But if you have anybody, um just share it with them. Anybody that you think that would like it or just um you want to share with, please do so. Um, we want to thank everybody just for listening um and sharing. If you already are sharing, we have officially reached in our first month of um Jesus and Besties, we have reached a hundred downloads, which is like amazing because we didn't think that we were even gonna be able to do any. That's a lot of people. But we yeah, it's a lot of people, and it's like different countries and like just cities, and it's crazy to see. But since the beginning, we've always like just told God, you know, asked well, shared with God is like even if it's just one person, Lord, like as long as it's a person that will, you know, is needing to hear it, that's all that matters to us. So, um, yeah, if you just you know want to share to anybody, please do so, guys. We just want to thank you guys because a hundred downloads in one month for us is like absolutely amazing. All glory to God. Thank you, Jesus. Um, but it's also like just you know, our community and friends and people that you know are listening to the podcast. So good.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, yeah. Alright, guys, so we're just gonna end in prayer. Do you want to talk about the walk?

SPEAKER_05

SPEAKER_03

So exciting. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

All right, anything else? I think that's all. All right, yeah, so we're gonna end in prayer and then um we'll see you the next episode. Heavenly Father, thank you so much for this time that we had today, Lord. Thank you for waking us up. Thank you for your daily blessings that you give us, Lord. Thank you for your protection, um, and your joy and your peace that you fill us with and your love. Um, thank you for being so patient and and grace, uh, gracefulness.

SPEAKER_00

Wait, how do I gracious?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, sorry guys. Thank you for being so gracious with us, Lord. Um, I just want to pray over every single listener today, Lord. May you just lift them up um with whatever that they're struggling with, Jesus, that remind them that you are there um during these hard times, during these hard situations, hard decisions, um, anything difficult that they may be going through, Lord, may you just remind them that you are there during these hard times through the storm. Um, that you are always going to be walking towards that storm with them, Lord, and that you are going to be um with them until the end of the storm and even more, Lord. May you just continue to bless them, may you continue to grow these seeds that are landing on their soil, and may it be good soil, Lord, to be able to bear good fruit, um, Jesus, and may you continue to just speak to them where they are able to just hear your voice, Lord, and what they want, uh, what you want them to do. And I just pray that they are obedient to you. Um, may you just continue to show your faithfulness um every single day, Lord, in all of the good things that happen, but maybe all of the hard things that also happen, Jesus. I pray ahead of protection over everybody, over their family, over their um cars, over their uh finances, their health. May you just bless them abundantly, Lord, and show them every single day your faithfulness in Jesus' name. Amen.

SPEAKER_00

Amen. Lord Jesus, thank you for coming down and um living a sinless life and taking all my sins on the cross. Um, Jesus, I believe that you are the Son of God and you were sent here um to be crucified, and you were resurrected on the third day. I believe that you are Lord. Come into my heart and fill me with your Holy Spirit. I make you my Lord and Savior in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. Amen.
